Protests targeting Indians, particularly members of the Punjabi community, have surfaced in parts of Australia following inflammatory remarks by far-right extremist Thomas Sewell, prompting strong condemnation from political leaders and renewed assurances from the Australian government regarding the safety and rights of migrant communities.

The controversy intensified after Sewell publicly called for Indians to leave Australia, declaring that he would not allow the country to “become India or Sudan.” His comments, widely circulated on social media and reported in Australian media, triggered outrage among Indian diaspora groups and raised concerns about rising xenophobic rhetoric. The issue comes at a time when Australia continues to position itself as a multicultural democracy with strong immigration ties to South Asia.

Thomas Sewell, known for his association with extremist ideologies, reportedly stated that Australia should be “only for whites” and described Indians as inferior, demanding their expulsion. His remarks have been widely condemned as racist and inflammatory. Sewell has been linked to the now-banned National Socialist Network, an organisation that Australian authorities have previously classified as extremist.

In response, the Australian government moved swiftly to distance itself from Sewell’s comments. Tony Burke, who also holds the immigration portfolio, issued a clear statement rejecting the extremist narrative. He emphasised that strict action would be taken against individuals spreading hatred under recently strengthened hate speech laws. Burke described Sewell as a threat to social cohesion and reiterated that such ideologies have no place in Australian society.

The government has reassured the Indian community, including over 200,000 Punjabi Sikhs and nearly one million Indians residing in Australia, that their security and rights remain protected. Officials stressed that Australia’s identity is rooted in diversity and that migrants contribute significantly to the nation’s economy, culture and social fabric.

escalation of rhetoric and public backlash

The controversy deepened when Sewell escalated his rhetoric outside a Melbourne court, where he protested against the granting of permanent residency to Indians. He claimed that the rapid issuance of visas, particularly to Punjabis, would erase Australia’s national identity. Citing demographic changes, he noted that Punjabi has become one of the most spoken languages in the country, framing this as evidence of what he termed “white replacement.”

Sewell argued that taxpayers’ money was being wasted on legal proceedings against him and accused mainstream media of failing to represent what he described as the views of “average Australians.” He further alleged that millions of illegal migrants were being allowed to remain in the country and claimed that migrants protesting outside government offices had no right to do so.

He characterised immigration as part of a broader conspiracy to undermine Australia’s cultural identity. Sewell also asserted that he would continue to oppose immigration policies and described it as his right to campaign against what he sees as demographic transformation. His remarks were widely interpreted as echoing white supremacist ideology.

Australian leaders from across the political spectrum criticised the statements. Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan described Sewell’s comments as disgusting and said there was no place for Nazi ideology in a multicultural society. She affirmed that law enforcement authorities had been given full authority to address extremist behaviour.

The federal government reiterated that Sewell’s organisation, the National Socialist Network, had been banned and that law enforcement agencies would not tolerate incitement of hatred. Authorities underscored that the new hate speech laws were designed precisely to counter such rhetoric and protect vulnerable communities.

extremist background and broader implications

Thomas Sewell has long been associated with neo-Nazi ideology. Born in New Zealand, he has positioned himself as a defender of what he describes as white rights in Australia. Over the years, he has been involved in multiple controversies, including violent altercations, public displays of extremist symbols and confrontations with media outlets.

In 2021, he was arrested after assaulting a security guard outside a Channel 9 office in Melbourne, an incident captured on video and widely shared. In 2025, he and his supporters were reportedly linked to clashes during a protest involving religious rights activists, resulting in multiple charges including rioting and assault. Sewell has also publicly displayed extremist flags associated with Nazi ideology, prompting bans on such symbols in several Australian states.

His disruption of a press conference by Victoria’s Premier further cemented his reputation as a provocateur. Following that incident, security agencies reportedly placed him on a high-risk watch list due to concerns about potential unrest.

The current episode has sparked wider conversations about the role of extremist voices in public discourse and the resilience of Australia’s multicultural framework. India is one of Australia’s largest sources of skilled migrants and international students. The Punjabi Sikh community, in particular, has established strong roots across cities such as Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, contributing to sectors ranging from agriculture and logistics to education and entrepreneurship.

Diplomatic observers note that India and Australia share expanding strategic and economic ties, making community harmony an important bilateral consideration. While isolated extremist rhetoric can generate headlines, Australian authorities have emphasised that such views do not reflect mainstream sentiment.

Community leaders within the Indian diaspora have called for calm and unity, urging members not to be provoked by inflammatory statements. Many have also highlighted the longstanding history of migration that has shaped modern Australia.

The government’s response underscores its intention to preserve social cohesion amid rising global debates over immigration and identity politics. Officials maintain that laws against hate speech and extremist activity will be enforced rigorously to prevent incitement and ensure public safety.

The situation illustrates the tension between freedom of expression and the limits imposed by laws designed to protect communities from racial vilification. As Australia continues to balance immigration policy, demographic change and social integration, incidents like these test institutional responses and public resilience.
