At least 63 killed in Johannesburg fire, over 40 injured

Johannesburg, 31 Aug :- At least 63 people were charred to death in a blaze that engulfed a multi-storeyed business centre in Johannesburg on Thursday morning. The firefighters were able to recover 63 dead bodies so far. More than 40 others received serious burn injuries and have been shifted to hospitals.

The reason behind the fire was not ascertained. Johannesburg Emergency Management Services Spokesperson Robert Mulaizi said that 63 charred bodies were recovered from the building. He also expressed the possibility of more people in the building. The dead include a child. The fire was not under complete control. The smoke is still emanating from the building. The building was a shelter for more than 200 homeless people.
