Beijing, 17 Aug : China is building an airstrip in Triton Island in the South China Sea. The disputed island is also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan. The island is in the Paracel group.
Satellite pictures show the construction of a runway being constructed under the supervision of Chinese Military personnel. The runway is more than 600 meters long and would be long enough to accommodate turboprop aircraft and drones, but not fighter jets or bombers.
China claims almost all of the South China Sea, despite an international tribunal finding its arguments to be without legal basis.
