NEW DELHI, 15 SEPTEMBER: International Day of Democracy is celebrated annually on September 15th to promote and defend democratic values and institutions around the world. Democracy is a system of government in which the people hold power and elect representatives to make decisions on their behalf. It is a system of government that is based on the principles of equality, freedom, and justice.
Why is democracy important?
Democracy is important because it allows the people to have a voice in their government. It also helps to ensure that governments are accountable to the people. Democracy is also important because it promotes peace and stability.
There are a number of things that we can do to strengthen democracy, including:
(i) Supporting democratic institutions
(ii) Educating ourselves about democracy and our rights
(iii) Engaging in civic life

Democracy is a precious gift, and it is our responsibility to protect it. On International Day of Democracy, we recommit ourselves to upholding the principles of democracy and to building a more just and equitable world.
