Rabat, 10 Sep : The powerful earthquake that struck Morocco on Friday night turned devastating. The death toll has risen to over 2,000 and more than that were injured.

The Internal Ministry has reported deaths of 2012 people, the majority of which were in the High Atlas Mountain region. The rescue teams are still engaged in removing the rubble created by the earthquake. A total of 2059 were injured, of which 1,404 were critical. The number of casualties is likely to increase further.

According to the media reports Amizmiz village was the most affected. The buildings collapsed and the debris on the roads posed difficulties for the rescue teams and machinery to approach the village. The historical city of Marrakech also suffered. The heritage buildings listed by the Unesco also were damaged.
