Royal Challengers Bengaluru began their WPL 2026 campaign with a thrilling three-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians, thanks to an extraordinary unbeaten innings from Nadine de Klerk that turned the match on its head. In a contest that appeared firmly in Mumbai’s control for long periods, de Klerk capitalised ruthlessly on crucial fielding errors and produced a fearless finishing act to guide RCB to victory in the final over. Chasing a target of 155 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, RCB reached 157 for 7 in 20 overs, scripting one of the most dramatic chases in the league’s recent history.

The match had everything expected of a high-profile WPL opener: a vibrant opening ceremony, early momentum swings, quality bowling spells, and a tense finish that kept the outcome undecided until the very last ball. While Mumbai Indians showcased their batting depth and bowling firepower in phases, lapses in the field at decisive moments proved costly. De Klerk’s calm under pressure, combined with her ability to seize every opportunity, ensured that RCB walked away with a statement win to start their season.

Mumbai post competitive total after mixed batting effort and disciplined RCB bowling

Mumbai Indians were asked to set the tone with the bat and made a steady start, opening their innings with intent but without undue risk. The early overs saw cautious accumulation as the batters looked to assess conditions and build a platform. Kamalini opened MI’s account and showed glimpses of confidence, while the team aimed to balance aggression with stability on a surface that offered something for both batters and bowlers.

However, Royal Challengers Bengaluru struck early to prevent Mumbai from running away with the innings. The breakthrough came when Kerr was dismissed, followed by the departure of Nat Sciver-Brunt, a key wicket that shifted momentum. RCB’s bowlers maintained tight lines and lengths, forcing MI’s batters to work hard for runs. Harmanpreet Kaur and Kamalini attempted to rebuild the innings with a partnership, focusing on rotating strike and targeting loose deliveries.

Just as Mumbai seemed poised to accelerate, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Shreyanka provided an important breakthrough, and de Klerk herself made an impact with the ball by removing Harmanpreet, a dismissal that prevented MI from fully capitalising on the middle overs. Sajana injected some late energy into the innings, playing a few entertaining strokes and lifting the scoring rate during the final phase.

Despite losing wickets, Mumbai managed to push their total to a competitive 154 for 6 in 20 overs. The final overs were crucial in taking MI past the 150 mark, a score that appeared defendable given the quality of their bowling attack and the early pressure they could exert. From Mumbai’s perspective, the total reflected a solid, if not dominant, batting performance that relied on collective contributions rather than a single standout innings.

As the teams headed into the break, Mumbai looked confident. Their bowlers had the resources to defend the target, and the surface seemed to reward discipline. Few would have predicted the dramatic turn of events that was about to unfold in the second innings.

De Klerk’s composure, missed chances, and explosive finish turn match decisively in RCB’s favour

Royal Challengers Bengaluru began their chase positively, with Grace Harris showing early intent alongside Smriti Mandhana. The opening partnership promised momentum, but Mumbai struck quickly to destabilise RCB’s plans. Mandhana fell to Shabnim Ismail for 18 off 13 balls, and the wickets began to tumble in quick succession. Harris was removed by Nat Sciver-Brunt, Hemalatha departed soon after, and Radha Yadav fell cheaply, leaving RCB reeling at 72 for 5 in just nine overs.

At that stage, the chase looked in serious trouble. Mumbai’s bowlers were on top, extracting movement and variation, while RCB’s batters struggled to find rhythm. The required run rate climbed steadily, and pressure mounted with every dot ball. It was in this moment of crisis that Nadine de Klerk walked in and changed the narrative of the match.

De Klerk initially took a cautious approach, focusing on strike rotation and building a partnership with Arundhati Reddy. The duo resisted the temptation to play risky shots, instead choosing to rebuild the innings ball by ball. Reddy played a vital supporting role, contributing 20 runs off 25 balls and allowing de Klerk the time to settle. Their partnership provided RCB with much-needed stability and kept the chase alive.

As de Klerk grew in confidence, she began to assert herself against the bowling. She targeted specific bowlers, including a productive over against Ishaque where boundaries began to flow. The momentum slowly shifted, and with each passing over, the belief in the RCB camp strengthened. Mumbai, sensing the danger, tightened their fields and looked for breakthroughs, but this is where the match turned decisively.

In the 19th over, Mumbai were presented with multiple opportunities to end the contest. De Klerk was dropped twice, and a run-out chance was also missed when Kamalini failed to gather the ball cleanly at the stumps. These moments proved pivotal. Instead of being dismissed, de Klerk remained at the crease, growing more confident with every reprieve.

The final over, bowled by Nat Sciver-Brunt, encapsulated the drama of the evening. RCB needed 18 runs from six balls, a challenging but not impossible equation. De Klerk began with two dot balls, increasing the tension, before launching a stunning counterattack. She smashed a six to long off, followed by a four to backward square leg, swinging momentum sharply in RCB’s favour. Another towering six to deep midwicket brought the equation down to just two runs off the final ball.

With the pressure at its peak, de Klerk held her nerve and struck the winning four to long off, sealing an unforgettable victory for RCB. She finished unbeaten on 63 off 44 balls, an innings that featured seven fours and two sixes, and one that will be remembered as one of the finest chases in WPL history.

Her performance was not just about power hitting but about situational awareness, patience, and the ability to capitalise on mistakes. Mumbai’s fielding lapses, particularly in the closing stages, contrasted sharply with de Klerk’s composure and proved to be the difference between the two sides.

For Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the win provided the perfect start to their WPL 2026 campaign, boosting confidence and reinforcing belief in their depth and resilience. For Mumbai Indians, the match served as a reminder of the fine margins at the highest level, where missed chances can undo otherwise strong performances. As the tournament progresses, both teams will reflect on this opening encounter as a defining early chapter in what promises to be another fiercely competitive WPL season.
