The National Council of Educational Research and Training has issued an urgent advisory directing the immediate recall of a Class 8 Social Science textbook after the Supreme Court banned it over objectionable remarks related to the judiciary. The council has instructed that all copies of the book be returned and has ordered the removal of related content from digital and social media platforms, following strong observations by the apex court.

The advisory states that anyone in possession of the Class 8 Social Science book titled Exploring Society: India and Beyond – Part 2 must return it without delay. The directive specifically concerns the chapter titled “Corruption in the Judiciary,” which has now been withdrawn. According to the notice, all printed copies containing the controversial chapter must be submitted to NCERT headquarters.

In addition to recalling physical copies, NCERT has directed that any online posts, digital extracts, or social media content relating to the chapter “The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society” from the same textbook must be removed immediately. The move signals a comprehensive effort to prevent further circulation of the disputed material in both print and digital formats.

The development follows a strong order from the Supreme Court, which imposed a complete ban on the Class 8 Social Science textbook. The court observed that the book contained objectionable remarks concerning corruption within the judiciary and stated that such content had harmed the institution’s image. The bench expressed concern over the portrayal of judicial challenges in a manner it found inappropriate for inclusion in a school-level textbook.

The textbook had reportedly mentioned issues such as corruption in the judicial system, a large backlog of pending cases, and a shortage of judges as challenges faced by the institution. While these topics are part of broader public discourse, the court found the presentation in the academic material objectionable and directed immediate action.

Following the court’s decision, NCERT issued an apology for what it described as “inappropriate content” in the chapter. The council stated that the book would be rewritten after consultation with concerned authorities to ensure that future editions meet academic standards and legal expectations. The apology and corrective steps underline the sensitivity surrounding institutional portrayal in educational materials.

The Union Ministry of Education played a key role in escalating the matter. A day before the Supreme Court’s formal ban, the ministry wrote to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, requesting them to prevent the book’s circulation through digital and electronic platforms. The communication came after the court’s strong observations and sought to ensure compliance across all distribution channels.

The recall directive now extends beyond publishers and schools to include individuals who may possess copies. By mandating the submission of all versions to NCERT headquarters, the council aims to centralize control over the withdrawn material and prevent unauthorized distribution. Educational institutions, libraries, and private sellers are expected to comply promptly with the advisory.

The Supreme Court, while banning the book, also issued four key directives concerning controversial educational materials. It ordered that central and state education departments must ensure immediate removal of the books from public access, whether in printed form, in schools, or available digitally. The court further clarified that distributing either printed or digital versions of the banned book would be considered a deliberate violation of its order.

In addition, the court directed the Chief Secretaries of all state education departments to submit an action report within two weeks detailing compliance measures taken in their respective jurisdictions. After reviewing these reports, the court indicated that it would form a committee to investigate the matter and identify those responsible for the inclusion and circulation of the contentious content.

The episode has reignited discussions on the balance between academic freedom and institutional respect within school curricula. Educational experts note that textbooks often address institutional challenges as part of civic education, but they also acknowledge the need for careful framing, particularly when dealing with constitutional bodies. The court’s intervention reflects the judiciary’s stance that educational material must uphold the dignity and integrity of constitutional institutions.

The recall also highlights the complex process of textbook development in India. NCERT textbooks are widely used across central schools and by several state boards, making any revision a matter of national importance. Content creation typically involves subject experts, editors, and review committees. The current controversy may prompt a re-evaluation of oversight mechanisms in the drafting and approval stages.

For students and teachers, the immediate impact includes disruption to ongoing lessons. Schools will likely receive further guidance on replacement materials or revised chapters once the rewriting process is completed. Education departments at both central and state levels are expected to coordinate to minimize academic inconvenience.

The digital removal directive underscores the growing challenge of controlling information in the online era. Even after printed copies are recalled, digital extracts can continue to circulate widely. By instructing the removal of related posts from social media and digital platforms, NCERT aims to ensure uniform compliance with the Supreme Court’s order.

The formation of a court-appointed committee to examine responsibility could introduce further scrutiny into textbook governance. Such a review may assess editorial processes, content vetting standards, and the chain of approvals that allowed the chapter to be published. The outcome could influence future policy guidelines for curriculum development.

As authorities move swiftly to implement the court’s directives, the incident serves as a reminder of the sensitivity attached to educational narratives involving constitutional institutions. The recall of the Class 8 textbook marks a significant moment in the intersection of education policy, judicial oversight, and public discourse.
