Pradosh Vrat, also known as Pradosham, is a revered Hindu fast observed in honor of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This auspicious vrat falls on the Trayodashi Tithi (13th day) of both the Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha, thus occurring twice every month according to the Hindu lunar calendar.

Upcoming Pradosh Vrat Dates in 2025

  • Next Pradosh Vrat: Friday, April 25

  • Following Pradosh Vrat: Friday, May 9

  • Vaisakha Pradosh Puja Muhurat: April 25, 6:47 PM to 9:02 PM

The observance is open to all individuals, irrespective of age or gender, and is marked by deep devotion and discipline. In some regions, devotees worship Lord Shiva in His Nataraj form on this day.

Methods of Observing the Vrat

As per the Skanda Purana, two fasting methods are prescribed:

  1. Full-day fast with a night vigil (24-hour observance)

  2. Daytime fast observed from sunrise to sunset, broken after the evening puja

The term “Pradosh” refers to the twilight period—the transition between day and night—which is considered sacred. The vrat is performed during this Sandhyakaal, believed to be a time when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are most pleased and generous.

Rituals and Puja Vidhi

The Pradosh rituals commence just before sunset. Devotees take a bath, wear clean clothes, and prepare for the evening puja:

  • A preliminary puja is conducted, where Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya, and Nandi are worshipped.

  • A Kalasha puja is performed, where Lord Shiva is invoked into a sacred pot placed on darbha grass with a lotus drawn on it. The pot is filled with water and placed near the altar.

  • In many households and temples, Shivling abhishekam is done with sacred substances like milk, curd, ghee, and honey, followed by offering of Bilva leaves—considered extremely auspicious.

  • Devotees listen to the Pradosh Vrat Katha and read passages from the Shiva Purana.

  • The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is chanted 108 times for spiritual strength and protection.

  • Sacred ash from the puja is applied on the forehead, and devotees may drink a small amount of Kalasha water as prasad.

  • Visiting Lord Shiva temples and lighting a single oil lamp is regarded as highly rewarding on this day.

By performing these rituals with sincerity, one can attain divine blessings, spiritual peace, and the removal of obstacles from life.

Significance and Benefits of Pradosh Vrat

The Skanda Purana extols the virtues of Pradosh Vrat. Observing this vrat is said to bring contentment, prosperity, spiritual progress, and relief from all sins. It is believed that even a single darshan of Lord Shiva during Pradosham can lead to immense spiritual benefits.

The significance of Pradosh Vrat also varies depending on the day it falls on:

  • Som Pradosh (Monday): Enhances positivity and fulfills desires.

  • Bhaum Pradosh (Tuesday): Offers relief from health issues and ensures physical well-being and prosperity.

  • Saumya Vaara Pradosh (Wednesday): Grants wisdom and fulfillment of wishes.

  • Guruvaara Pradosh (Thursday): Eliminates dangers and invokes blessings from ancestors (Pitru).

  • Bhrigu Vaara Pradosh (Friday): Brings contentment, success, and the removal of negative energy.

  • Shani Pradosh (Saturday): The most significant Pradosh Vrat, associated with the recovery of lost wealth and career advancement.

  • Bhaanu Vaara Pradosh (Sunday): Promotes longevity, peace, and spiritual growth.

Through dedicated observance of Pradosh Vrat, devotees not only seek blessings from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati but also strive for inner peace, improved well-being, and divine grace in their lives.
