Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s family has firmly dismissed rumours of a heart attack, clarifying that the celebrated director is completely fine and had only visited Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital for a routine medical check-up.

Speculation began circulating after reports claimed that Bhansali had been admitted to hospital following a heart attack on Tuesday, which coincided with his 63rd birthday. The unverified claims quickly spread across social media platforms, triggering concern among fans and members of the film fraternity. However, the family promptly issued a statement putting the rumours to rest and assuring well-wishers that there is no cause for alarm.

According to the statement, Bhansali underwent a normal routine health check-up and was not admitted for any cardiac emergency. The family emphasized that he is in good health and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and prayers from admirers. The clarification comes as relief to fans who have closely followed the director’s illustrious career spanning decades in Indian cinema.

Ongoing work on ‘Love & War’ with Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal

Even as rumours briefly clouded public discourse, Bhansali continues to focus on his upcoming film, Love & War. The project features a high-profile cast including Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. The film has generated significant anticipation given Bhansali’s reputation for grand storytelling, intricate visuals and emotionally charged narratives.

Known for his meticulous approach to filmmaking, Bhansali is deeply involved in every creative aspect of his projects, from production design to music composition. Industry insiders suggest that pre-production and creative discussions for Love & War are progressing steadily. The director’s commitment to cinematic excellence remains undeterred, and his health update reassures stakeholders and fans alike that work on the film continues without disruption.

Bhansali’s journey in cinema began under the mentorship of Vidhu Vinod Chopra, where he worked as an assistant before stepping into direction. His debut film, Khamoshi: The Musical, received critical acclaim for its emotional depth and musical richness. Though not a commercial blockbuster, it established Bhansali as a director with a distinct artistic voice.

He rose to widespread prominence with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, a romantic drama that became both a commercial success and a cultural milestone. This was followed by Devdas, an opulent adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel that cemented his status as one of Bollywood’s most visionary filmmakers. The film’s lavish sets, haunting music and powerful performances earned critical acclaim globally.

A legacy of grand cinema, awards and artistic vision

Over the years, Bhansali has crafted a filmography marked by emotional intensity and visual grandeur. Films such as Black showcased his ability to handle sensitive subjects with nuance and depth, earning numerous awards and critical praise. Although Saawariya did not achieve expected box office success, it further demonstrated his commitment to stylized storytelling and bold cinematic experimentation.

His later works embraced historical and epic narratives, beginning with Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, followed by Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat. These films combined elaborate production design with dramatic storytelling, reinforcing Bhansali’s signature aesthetic. Each project reflected a scale and ambition rarely seen in contemporary Hindi cinema.

In 2024, Bhansali expanded his creative canvas to digital platforms with Heeramandi, marking his debut in the web series format. The project retained his trademark visual richness while exploring complex historical themes for a new generation of viewers.

Throughout his career, Bhansali has been honored with multiple accolades, including seven National Film Awards and the Padma Shri in 2015, recognizing his contributions to Indian cinema. His body of work reflects a blend of artistic vision, emotional storytelling and meticulous craftsmanship.

The recent health rumours, though unsettling for fans, have now been conclusively addressed. With his family confirming that the hospital visit was merely a routine check-up, attention returns to Bhansali’s creative endeavors and the anticipation surrounding his forthcoming film. As one of the most influential filmmakers in Indian cinema, his continued well-being remains a matter of heartfelt concern and celebration among admirers worldwide.
