New Delhi, September 1 : The Supreme Court has sentenced Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Prabhunath Singh, a four-time MP from Bihar, to life imprisonment in the 1995 double murder case. The Supreme Court ordered Prabhunath Singh and the Bihar government to pay compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the victims.
On August 18, the Supreme Court convicted Prabhunath Singh in the double murder case. On September 1, the Supreme Court was ordered to present Prabhunath Singh before it for debate on the sentence. Today, the Supreme Court amended this order and allowed Prabhunath Singh to appear through video conferencing.
Prabhunath Singh is already lodged in Hazaribagh jail under a life sentence in another murder case. Prabhunath Singh is accused of killing two people at a polling booth in Mashrakh in 1995. The allegation was that both people had not voted for the candidate supported by Prabhunath Singh. That’s why both were murdered. In this case, Harendra Rai, brother of deceased Rajendra Rai, had complained about threatening the witnesses. After this, the case was transferred from Chhapra Court to Patna. The trial court in Patna had acquitted Prabhunath Singh. After this, the Patna High Court also acquitted Prabhunath Singh in 2012. The High Court order was challenged by Harendra Rai in the Supreme Court.
