Bengaluru, 27 July (H.S): Basavaraj Bommai, former Home Minister in the previous BS Yediyurappa cabinet has been chosen new leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party this evening here.
He happens to be the son of late SR Bommai, former Chief Minister, union Human Resources Minister and National President, Janata Dal. He represents the Shiggavi constituency in the Haveri district.
A Mechanical Engineering graduate from the BV Bhoomraddi Engineering college, Hubballi, he set up his own industry at Hubballi and Bengaluru before joining active politics.
In fact, he entered public life by plunging into the Kalasa Barndoor Naala movement aimed at reaching the Mahadayi River waters for drinking purposes to rain parched regions of Dharwad, Gadag and Haveri districts in 2007. Interestingly people continue to agitate to date for accomplishing their long-cherished dream.
